Working hours were logged in a paper attendance book and then copied into Excel. Leave requests were also filed on paper, and a designated person handled the checks and kept every employee's records up to date. The point where it became clear something had to change came from time tracking itself: the records had to match the hours actually worked, and the overtime balance was hard to keep track of.
